Executive Committee and Chair for 2007-2008 are Kimberly Wells, Executive Committee Chair and Treasurer, Starr Hoffman and Annita Owens, Publicity/Graphics Committee Co-Chairs, Fred Kamman, Fundraising/Community Sponsor Chair, Stacey Irish-Keffer, Children's Committee Chair, Sue Park, Film Committee Co-Chair, Gayla Byerly, Author Committee, Annie Downey, Programming Committee, and Donna Kearley, Executive Secretary.
The first item on the agenda is the need for a co-chair for the Film Committee. No one had any suggestions but would try to brainstorm ideas for the next meeting.
Kimberly Wells reported that Eva Poole authorized a Denton Public Library treasurer's account which could be used like the summer reading program account. All grants and contracts would still be handled through the Denton Public Library Friends Group but the monies would be deposited into a Denton Public Library account. Anyone on the committee with access to a Denton Public Library P-card could pay for items associated with Denton Reads. This would still be handled in conjunction with the Friends of the Denton Public Library, however, this would give Denton Reads more flexibility close to the deadline when expenses need to be handled quickly. A motion was made to adopt using this type of account. Motion carried.
The Executive Board decided to concentrate on reaching adults and high school students with the Denton Reads project. We decided to plan a separate reading promotion for elementary and middle school students. This would allow us to focus on one book. This would also eliminate a need for a Children's Festival and separate books for children and youth. A motion was made to this effect and the motion carried.
We discussed various grants that are available. The Target grand is focused on children's reading promotion. The grant is awarded in July and is opened up in February. The Humanities Council is a rolling grant that is awarded every few months. The NEA grant could be written for either a very large grant or a smaller grant. Both are available.
The last item on the agenda was the book discussion for the next Denton Reads promotion in October 2008. Kimberly booktalked several titles and said she would post these to the wiki. She suggested that we vote on which of these titles we are most interested in as well as submit 3-5 titles we would like considered before our next meeting.
The next meeting will be Wednesday, August 15 at Emily Fowler Public Library at 2:00 P.M.
Meeting adjourned at 3:30 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Donna Kearley
