 Minutes

April 30, 2008

Present:  Lilly Ramin, Annie Downey, Kimberly Wells, Thom Anderson, Gayla Byerly, Greg Hardin, Annita Owens, Stacey Irish-Keffer

The group discussed the new group wishing to put together a One Book, One Conference through the University of North Texas English Department.  Denton Reads decided to focus our group on an Author Event where the author discusses his works.   This would help distinguish between the two events and clarify any confusion in the minds of the community.  We agreed to participate in the both groups if possible.

Kimberly reported on an update to the airline and hotel arrangements being made for Orson Scott Card and his family.  Gayla will be in contact with Christine Card and will coordinate.

The group discussed the number of posters needed and the costs involved.  This was referred to the Publicity committee.  We also discussed the need for publicity photos for Orson Scott Card.

The possible locations for book discussion groups was discussed and it was decided to use the various libraries, Barnes and Noble, and  Jupiter House (and/or Recycled Books). The book clubs will not be the intensive book clubs like last year but one-shots and  focus the advertising on a few locations from the beginning. This will cause less confusion and bring in more participants possibly.   It was discussed that each high school might wish to host a book discussion group.  Possible leaders were brainstormed including -  Lilly Ramin (UNT book club), Aaron Graves, Annie Downey, Marcus Moore - RHS.  It was suggested that both the host librarian plus someone from the Denton Reads book discussion committee lead discussions. Contact for book clubs--Lilly.Ramin@unt.edu

Possible programs to go along with this book and author were brainstormed.

Annita brought a copy of the first draft for the Press Release.  The committee edited it and approved it.

We discussed the need to talk to Sue Parks about the budget needs of the Film Festival and this item was tabled until the next meeting.

The need for volunteers and the toll on the work enviornments at the various libraries was discussed.

The next meeting with be May 28 at 2:00 at Emily Fowler.
