2007 Children's Festival Committee Report

Considering the short amount of time, the funding activities that were still ongoing, and the fact that this was the initial occurrence for the Children’s Festival, we were pleased with the turn out and the 121 attendees.

In evaluating the event we found that these things went well and should be continued:

  1. The use of Quakertown Park
  2. Borrowing tables from Denton ISD
  3. Camp Tonkawa
  4. Mural with Kendra
  5. Thom’s Barnes & Noble storytime tent
  6. Games from the DPL
  7. Face Painting/Bounce House
  8. Family Resource Center
  9. Dental Hygiene Center
  10. Books from TWU GLISA – puppets
  11. 10-12AM time
  12. Play Children’s Music

What would we change:

  1. Group activities by ages
  2. More Pre-teen activities
  3. More publicity at the even possibly adding a banner.
  4. More publicity. The  bookmarks need more information on it including time, location, cost, and other information requested by callers to the Denton Public Library.
  5. Plan for water or food ahead of time
  6. More targeted publicity for each of the three major events.
  7. If we extend the time we’ll need to plan for food
  8. Budget for items like the animal guy and a bounce house
  9. Follow through with recycling containers
  10. Cultivate relationship with TAMS
  11. Make sure we have a set up and tear down crew
  12. Add Storytellers, and children tellers
In planning for the future we found that the Children’s Festival worked and has the potential to grow.    We want to focus on what we do best i.e.bring books and activities to families through hands-on exploration.

Additional activities we might want to consider for future events:
  1. Demonstrations by the TWU Dance or Gymnastics teams
  2. Information for families from the Food Services & Nutrition –TWU or UNT
  3. Have representation from the College of Education  at TWU & UNT
  4. Request the use of the Ampitheater for storytellers and musicians
  5. Alternate Storytellers with Children’s Music every 30 minutes
  6. Alternate Animal Shows with a  children’s petting zoo
  7. Ask if the High School Mascots could come for an hour each

Other contacts we might suggest helping with the Children’s Festival:
